Exciting Week —Going Back to Space!

Melbourne, Fla.— On Wednesday, May 27th, at around 4:33 pm, Florida’s Space Coast will enliven its number one public attraction, with a historic milestone in human spaceflight as NASA prepares for #LaunchAmerica – the first flight into orbit of American astronauts on American rockets from American soil since the end of the space shuttle era in 2011.

The mission, Demo-2, will send NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley to the International Space Station from Kennedy Space Center this week, as part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program.

Hurley will be the spacecraft commander for Demo-2 mission. He will be responsible for activities like the launch, landing, and recovery. He has completed two space shuttle flights, as he served as the pilot and lead robotics operator for both the STS‐127 in July 2009 and STS‐135 in July 2011. The latter flight was the final space shuttle mission.

Behnken, on the other hand, will be the joint operations commander for the mission. He will be responsible for activities like rendezvous, docking, and undocking. He has completed two space shuttle flights, as he flew STS-123 in March 2008 and STS-130 in February 2010. He performed three spacewalks during each mission.

Demo-2 will be SpaceX’s second spaceflight test of its Crew Dragon craft and its first test with astronauts aboard. This is the final test flight prior to NASA certification which will provide data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, the Crew Dragon and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, and landing operations.

Live video coverage and countdown commentary begins at 12:15 p.m. May 27, and can be watched on NASA TV, YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Linkedin.

At Melbourne Truck Insurance, we are truly excited to be part of this amazing community, filled with ingenuity, high technology, innovation, and amazing humans behind every part of this story, including the two astronauts who will sacrifice much of their normal way of life, for the good of the whole planet.

Events like the one taking place this week bring life to our business community, putting our Space Coast in the eye of the entire world. Everybody wins!

In times as challenging as the ones we’re living right now, with an economy threatened by a global pandemic which has put the world on lockdown, and slowed down consumer expenditures and confidence — this event is a big deal for our Central Florida region.

SpaceX aims to propel the U.S. into a historic new era of commercially led space exploration. No company has flown commercially developed hardware carrying humans and rendezvoused with the international space station. It is expected to be a resounding achievement for Space Exploration Technologies Corp.; its founder, Elon Musk; and a milestone for NASA.

Of course, we are happy to see businesses thrive in the area, and with that, happy to offer insurance solutions that will keep them well secured, and protected. Trucking and transportation are an essential part of these type of businesses and contractors. Providing services to government, and private companies who support the Space Coast’s role as a hub for technology, aviation and aerospace for the nation, is of utmost importance. Melbourne Truck Insurance has come to fulfill an impending demand in comercial, and transportation insurance solutions for different types of businesses in all categories.
