Busy Schedule on our Florida Space Coast Means Business

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

Melbourne, Fla.—Have you watched the amazing series AWAY on Netflix yet? There is so much excitement going on around the Perseverance rover, which had a successful launch on July 30th of this year 2020 on an Atlas V rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

Percy’s (Perseverance’s nickname) main mission: To find out if life was ever on the Red Planet.  It not only seeks signs of habitable conditions on Mars in the ancient past, but also will search for signs of past microbial life.

Percy will be the first rover to make a complete round trip mission to Mars. It is also the first rover specifically designed to collect retrievable samples. It is now on its way to seek signs of ancient life and collect rock and soil samples for possible return to Earth. Along with the rover is the Ingenuity helicopter, a technology demonstration that will be the first powered flight on Mars. The rover will arrive on the Red Planet on Feb. 18, 2021.

So far, manned missions to Mars could be possible by the 2030s, according to a group of scientists, and Percy will be able to explore the planet to find signs of life. Its 95 percent carbon dioxide atmosphere, temperatures ranging from 70 degrees Fahrenheit in the day to -80 degrees Fahrenheit at the night, abrasive dust, and extremely high levels of radiation does not make it a desirable tourist destination.

For all of us Floridians, these are amazing developments that were are being able to watch first hand, many from their very own backyards in Brevard County.

Not only that, the space exploration program and these missions are bringing a lot of livelihood to our commerce and businesses in our neck of the woods.
